The Social Studies Playlist

How to use:

Hey all! Mr. Bailey here. The video above should give you an idea of what my expectations are. These activities are designed to help reinforce all we have been learning thus far. Playlists provide structured educational activities in specified lessons to build your confidence and give you the foundation needed to earn your high school diploma. Each activity completed will garner your spins. The student with the highest number of spins wins a DAABA! (exclusive gift card) Let's get started! NOTES: Although the site is mobile-friendly, some of the challenges need to be completed on a tablet, laptop, or desktop. Bolded terms throughout the playlist signify importance.

Lesson 1: Exploration, Colonialism, and American Revolution

The Revolutionary War marked the period of time when the English colonists won their independence from their parent country - Great Britain. This content will help to reinforce the information we are gaining from our social studies packet.

Track 1

Recall

Using lesson 1 in your packet, identify the bolded terms:

The Thirteen Colonies, Continental Congress, Declaration of Independence, American Revolution, Articles of Confederation, U.S. Constitution, and Bill of Rights.

Use the above-bolded words and write a paragraph summarizing the first lesson we have studied. Make sure you label your sentences (at least 5-6) with the following: Intro, Main Idea, Major Support, and Minor Support.

For example, "The U.S. Constitution provided a safeguard for U.S. citizens by adding the Bill of Rights.(Main Idea)

Your paragraph should be sent to my email address: njycjerseycity@gmail.com

Track 3

Strategic Thinking

Let's say we could take a time machine back to the colonies right before the war begins. The air is full of tension after events like the Boston Tea Party, and the Boston Massacre. The Intolerable Acts put even more of a burden on the masses. Although many colonists were willing to go against King George III and his relentless tyranny, some were still hesitant and loyal to Parliament and the monarchy. In this educational simulation, you work for a local newspaper supporting the Patriots. You have been asked to create a promotional poster to persuade the colonists why they should change their minds.

Your poster must include the following:

  1. Four bulletproofed reasons it is time for complete American independence.

  2. An attractive, engaging hook as a headline that will attract attention.

  3. A relevant political cartoon picture embedded within your poster complete with source information and your paraphrased sentence interpretation.

  4. Overall creative use of color schemes, fonts, and other graphics.

You can create your poster on Canva or Glogster using your Gmail accounts.

Extended Thinking

In this exercise, you get an opportunity as a colonist to express your feelings to the Continental Congress in 1774. This is a year before the first battle of the Revolutionary War. Some of the congressional members are loyalists to the King and require further convincing on why revolution is a just cause against Great Britain. As a person of significant influence in your town, the people count on you to articulate your position, which they also share. Using the application Flipgrid, you will shoot a selfie video and have to make your points in two minutes or less on why we should declare independence which will inevitably lead to war.

Lesson 2: Westward Expansion, the

Civil War and Reconstruction

Lesson 2 focuses on America expanding through things such as the Lousiana Purchase and the Lewis & Clark Expedition. It also covers the brutal Civil War, which revolves around slavery and states' rights. After the war, the nation goes through Reconstruction in order to bring the country back together after the southern succession. Once again, this playlist is designed to reinforce the information we are covering in our packet.

Track 6
Recall

Lesson 2 introduces to us multiple vocabulary terms and people to become familiar with. After reading the section within the packet, please complete this Quizlet and be sure to jot down some notes in your notebook.

Track 7
Application of Skills

Frederick Douglass has a phenomenal story of freedom and triumph. He is one of the most influential and impactful Americans in history. He also was a prolific writer and fantastic orator. I share his namesake as my first name (Douglass) and have his formally given last name (Bailey). I greatly admire this man and grew up learning about his life. One of the first books I had to read was his autobiography, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave. Douglass was a friend to President Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War and advocated for African Americans in many ways during that time period, which is why we are covering him in this lesson.

I would like you, as my students, to learn more about Mr. Douglass and his pivotal contributions to the United States and society as a whole. This assignment is an interactive tutorial about Douglass and some crucial moments in his life. Douglass was an enslaved man in America who miraculously escaped the bonds of slavery. It wasn't easy! This tutorial will require you to download PDFs and answer the questions presented. At the end of the lesson, you will be presented with a completion certificate which you will download and email to me. I would also like you to summarize your thoughts on the tutorial in three to four sentences.

The Lousiana Purchase was a significant piece of expansion for the United States. Federalists (strong supporters of a centralized government in the U.S.) opposed then-President Thomas Jefferson's negotiation with France because the Constitution didn't mention anything specific about government purchasing of a foreign land. Although the Lousiana Purchase doubled the size of the country at the time and is a vital part of our country today, why were people opposed to it initially?

Using the app Book Creator, you will put together a pamphlet/magazine/book that discusses the pros and cons of the Lousiana Purchase. You need to list at least two pros and two cons. Then you will add your personal opinion at the end. Since this is in a book format, you will also need an eyecatching cover and pictures. Each pro and con can be a separate page along with photos for no less than seven pages total, including the cover.

Below is a page example.

In the final exercise for lesson 2, I want you to focus on the three key ideas and use the "how and why" line of questions attributed to each concept and create a Quizizz game! That is right - you are the teacher now. I am looking for at least five questions and answers based on key idea understanding.

With Quizizz, you can customize your quiz as you choose. You can make multiple-choice, open-ended, and fill-in-the-blank questions or statements. Try to mix them up to provide variety.

The goal is to create a quiz that your peers can also utilize. I will take your questions and statements, pick the most engaging and noteworthy ones, and create a super Quizizz we will use on our next in-person class date!

Once you have completed developing your quiz, please email it to me. Below is a tutorial video to help you format your Quizizz and a link to the site. Sign up for a teacher's account with your Gmail address; when they ask you which school, type in NJ Youth Corps. If it isn't, an option should be available to add our school. Next, you should be at the dashboard and can create your test from there.

I look forward to seeing your contributions to our learning environment! If you have any questions, please reach out to me!
